READY TO SERVE
KUMAGAI FOR ASSEMBLY
MEET SHAWN
Meet Shawn. He’s a third-generation LGBTQ veteran. Son of a first generation Japanese immigrant and only Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) candidate in the race. He’s a national security expert with 20 years of Navy experience, District Director for a progressive Assemblywoman, and lifelong Democrat who made history as the first openly gay City Councilmember elected in Dublin. Shawn worked his way through school, and as a Naval linguist holds a degree in Mandarin Chinese and a Masters in Instructional Science and Technology.
With the heartbreaking loss of his mother, Shawn stepped up and became legal guardian to his younger brother. They planted roots in Dublin but with skyrocketing housing costs barring so many families from homeownership, Shawn made affordable housing his mission.
He was an Organizing for Action fellow and was elected by his neighbors as a California Democratic Party delegate. In 2018, Shawn became the first LGBTQ person ever elected to the Dublin City Council. Since then, he’s been delivering transit-oriented affordable housing for seniors and low-income residents, helping local small businesses stay afloat during the pandemic, expanding good-paying green jobs, and making his city safer. Shawn’s also getting results from Sacramento for Alameda County families as District Director for Democratic Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan and fighting for us as a Navy Reservist assigned to an intelligence unit at Camp Parks.
Today, Shawn is the only elected official and the only member of the AAPI and gay community running for this open Assembly seat. That means he’s the only candidate with the right experience and proven record of delivering results for Alameda County. Trust Shawn to take on the affordability crisis, deliver affordable housing and health care, and increase transportation equity and access.
