My name is Shawn Kumagai and I humbly ask for your support in my campaign for Dublin City Council. I’m a committed service member of 17 years*, son of a first-generation immigrant, guardian to my younger brother, Kevin, and a committed partner to my fiance, Alex. I’m running for city council because I want to ensure Dublin remains a safe and accessible community for people of many backgrounds to come together to live, work, and play.
I feel very fortunate to live in Dublin. Two years ago, when I was returning from a deployment, I spent a lot of time considering where to settle and raise my younger brother. I decided to make Dublin my home because of the great schools, close community, and proximity to my extended family in the Bay Area. Currently, I work as an instructional design consultant for PG&E. My brother is a Sophomore at Dublin High School and an active member of the Sea Cadets, Rear Admiral C.W. Parks Battalion.
I’m a third-generation veteran. My mother served in the Army Nurse Corps, my grandfather served during World War II in the Army Air Corps, and my uncle is an Air Force Academy graduate. I have served the past 17 years in the United States Navy (10 years active duty and 7 years in the reserves) as a linguist. Currently I have the privilege of serving as a Master Chief Petty Officer in the Navy Reserve and am assigned to an intelligence unit right here at Camp Parks. It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve alongside some of our nation’s finest women and men.
Early in my military career I attended the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, California where I received an Associate of Arts in Chinese Mandarin. While serving on Active Duty, I completed my Bachelors Degree by attending school part-time and then went on to get a Masters of Instructional Science and Technology at CSU Monterey Bay. My areas of expertise are in adult learning, training, and professional development. My recent military assignments include training management at United States Central Command and United States Cyber Command.
After settling here in Dublin I became very active in political organizing. In 2017 I was elected to represent Democrats in Assembly District 16 as a delegate to the California Democratic Party (CDP). I also serve as the State Secretary for the CDP Asian Pacific Islander Caucus and was a founding board member for the Lambda Democratic Club of Contra Costa County. I am a trained Fellow for Organizing for Action and within that organization have worked as a volunteer organizer throughout the region on immigration issues.
